Preparing Future Faculty Fellowship Program

UMKC's Preparing Future Faculty Fellowship Program is modeled after a national Preparing Future Faculty Project conceived by the Council of Graduate Schools and the American Association of Colleges and Universities in 1993 and funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts. The primary goals of PFF programs are to expose graduate students to a variety of teaching, research, and service experiences at various types of institutions beyond the research university and to ultimately change the culture of graduate education. At UMKC, PFF Fellows receive fellowship stipends for three years, work closely with faculty mentors throughout their program, participate in teaching excellence seminars, and explore the range of faculty roles and opportunities at a variety of institutions of higher education. Three themes are integrated into the PFF Fellow activities:

Preparing for excellence in teaching:
Focus on diversity, technology, Interdisciplinarity, and collaboration

• Incorporating technology in your teaching -- distance education / on-line courses / enhancing learning with electronic media
• Teaching Large Classes
• Collaborative Learning / Interdisciplinary Team-Teaching
• Teaching from a Multicultural Perspective
• Practicing the models - experience in teaching

Exploring the Possibilities:
Focus on range of faculty roles and variations among “cluster” institutions

• Overview of faculty roles at a variety of institutions of higher education
• Understanding varying expectations for faculty performance
• Exposure to a range of higher education settings
• Forecasting the future of higher education - Scholars for the New Century

Preparing for the Job Market:
Focus on putting your best foot forward to achieve your career goals

• Developing a Teaching Portfolio/Career Portfolio
• Professional networking strategies / Convention survival techniques
• Making effective presentations
• Practicing for the job interview
• Understanding the campus culture - tenure process, committee service, dealing with ethical dilemmas
• How will you, as PFF Fellows, satisfy these program expectations?
• Set your own goals for your Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) Fellowship Experience
• Tailor the overall program expectations to meet your personal goals
• Work closely with your faculty mentor
• Participate fully in dialogues/discussions with your PFF Fellow colleagues
• Select the “cluster” experiences that support your goals
• Prepare a Teaching/Career Portfolio, in consultation with your faculty mentor, to be critiqued by the PFF Steering Committee during your final year in the program
• Serve as a “peer” mentor during years 2 and 3
