Applications for 2023-24 academic year now closed.
We offer several fellowships to help you afford to pursue your advanced degree at UMKC. To apply for these fellowships , you must submit the appication, your, transcripts, one or more letters of recommendation and any other material required by the application.
Graduate Opportunity Fellowship
The Opportunity Fellowship application is closed for 2023-24. Check back in the late Fall semester for updates about the 2024-25 application.
The School of Graduate Studies aims to support students who are members of minority groups or have federally recognized disabilities. The purpose of this fellowship is to support doctoral students who have circumstances that impact their ability to successfully complete their degree.
Award amount
This award comes with an academic year stipend of $10,000 plus remission of up to 12 hours of graduate education tuition.
Eligibility
- Currently enrolled, degree-seeking doctoral students
- U.S. citizens
- Members of a federally recognized U.S. racial or ethnic minority group or have a federally recognized disability
- Students who plan to graduate before Spring 2024 are not eligible for this award

- Transcripts of previous work
- For continuing UMKC students, supply only a UMKC transcript. In Pathway’s “Self Service,” there is an option in “Academic Records” to request an unofficial transcript to be sent to your university email address, rather than paying $10 for the official copy.
- Three faculty letters of recommendation; one must be from your primary advisor, chairperson or mentor
Arthur Mag Graduate Fellowship
The Arthur Mag fellowship application is closed for 2023-24. Check back in the late Fall semester for updates about the 2024-25 application.
Award amount
The Arthur Mag Graduate Fellowship includes a stipend of $10,000 plus remission of up to 12 hours of graduate education tuition.
Eligibility
- Applicants must be currently enrolled graduate students in academic programs from the Bloch School of Management; the School of Humanities and Social Sciences; the School of Science and Engineering; the School of Education, Social Work and Psychological Sciences; or the School of Law.
- The award is based on merit, personality and citizenship.
- Students who plan on graduating before Spring 2024 are not eligible for this award program
- A committee of community members makes the final selection

Ronald A. MacQuarrie Graduate Fellowship
The MacQuarrie Fellowship application is closed for 2023-24. Check back in the late Fall semester for updates about the 2024-25 application.
The MacQuarrie Fellowship Fund was formed to assist graduate students with financial need to pursue their graduate education. Dr. Ron MacQuarrie served as dean of the School of Graduate Studies from 1995 to 2011.

- Preference given to students with financial need and academic potential

Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) Scholar Fellowship
Deadline January 29th, 2023
Preparing Future Faculty applications have closed. Check back in the late Fall semester for updates about the 2024-25 application.
The PFF program is a 12-credit, two-year online graduate certificate program in college teaching and career preparation. Fellowships for the PFF program are awarded each year to competitively selected new program applicants.
Award amount
- PFF Fellows receive tuition remission for three credits and a stipend of $2,500.
- The award may be renewable for the second year of the program provided recipients are making satisfactory progress in the program.
Eligibility
Only current or prospective graduate students who wish to participate in the PFF program are encouraged to apply for the PFF Fellowship.
Application requirements
- Signed letter of recommendation from a faculty mentor that comments on the applicant’s suitability for the program
- Signed one-page letter stating goals for program participation and educational history
- Completed program application
