Guidance on Graduate Assistant FTE and Tuition Remission

  • Graduate Assistants are normally assigned at the 0.25 or 0.50 FTE levels, with 10 hours of work per week expected for each 0.25 FTE.
  • Graduate Assistants cannot hold a total work assignment at UMKC exceeding 0.70 FTe, and those whose total work assignment exceeds 0.50 FTE must have permission for an exception from the School of Graduate Studies. Students can request an exception in advance of the semester in which the workload will exceed 0.50 FTE using this petition.
  • A 0.50 FTE level Graduate Assistant typically receives a minimum of 6 credits tuition remission (resident and non-resident, if applicable) each semester and tuition remission can be adjusted accordingly by FTE (e.g., 0.25 FTE receives 3 hours).
  • The minimum tuition remission awarded can also be adjusted accordingly if the number of outstanding course requirements in the student's degree program is less than the standard 5 each semester per 0.50 FTE (or 3 each semester per 0.25 FTE). Students who are completing a thesis or dissertation, for example, may require tuition remission for only 1-2 credits per semester.
  • Units may award more than the minimum 6 hours tuition provided the tuition remission covers coursework required for the degree program in which the Graduate Assistant is enrolled.
