Reviewing the procedures and the UMKC Guidelines to Formatting Theses and Dissertations in advance can save time and help avoid stress, especially for candidates who are completing their degrees, moving, applying for or beginning new jobs at virtually the same time. The most important thing you can do to make your process go smoothly is to take time to learn about requirements, mark deadlines on your calendar, and be realistic about the amount of time you will need.
Theses and dissertations must be submitted by the posted deadline in order to make sure each one meets the University guidelines. All theses and dissertations left for format review should be accompanied by a Preliminary Approval form signed by the chair of the student’s supervisory committee and a signed copy of the MOspace License Agreement.
Theses and dissertations will also be accepted via email attachment to umkcsgs@umkc.edu. If submitted electronically, the thesis or dissertation must be in a single document and must be accompanied by a signed copies of the Preliminary Approval form signed by the chair of the student’s supervisory committee and by a signed copy of the MOspace License Agreement. Document attachments should be named in this manner:
If the thesis/dissertation document is too large to be sent by email, please use the UMKC Digital Dropbox which will allow you to send documents up to 2GB. You can also utilize OneDrive via your UMKC account.
Once you have submitted your thesis or dissertation to the School of Graduate studies for review, you will be notified within 2-3 weeks of approval or be asked to set an appointment to review needed corrections with the Senior Information Specialist.
After approval of the format, and after receiving Doctoral Dissertation Final Evaluation form or Masters Thesis Final Evaluation form from each of your supervisory committee members (usually after oral defense), the School of Graduate Studies will provide you instructions to post the final, corrected version of your thesis using the UMKC ETD Administrator and you must do so by the final submission deadline. If your thesis requires corrections, you must bring the original draft that you initially submitted to SGS when your final version is posted online, by the final submission deadline, so that we can confirm that any requested corrections have been made.
If a thesis or dissertation is found to be unacceptable or incomplete, you may be asked to consult with your advisory and supervisory committee and reapply for graduation and resubmit your paper the following semester.
